Before you start
This tool gives an instant valuation of what a stone could sell for, using the Stormfire Opals price guide. Please read these points first.
- An instant valuation, not a formal one. It is an indicative figure from our price guide. It is not a formal valuation by a registered valuer, an appraisal or an insurance certificate, and it is not an offer to buy.
- Based on our price guide. Figures come from Stormfire's own $ per carat settings for opal type, grade, colour, pattern, finish and faults. Real sale prices vary with the market, the buyer and how the stone is presented.
- Photos have limits. A phone camera can't reliably show cracks, sand, potch lines or true brightness, and lighting changes everything. Always check the stone in hand, in daylight.
- Carat estimates are approximate. Weight worked out from measurements can be 15% or more out, especially for boulder opal, because ironstone is heavier than opal. Weigh the stone when you can.
- Keeping your photos. Each opal's photos are saved with it in My Opals and stored securely in your Stormfire account, so you can see them on any phone or computer you sign in on. Deleting an opal also deletes its photos, so keep your own copies of any you want to hold on to.
What kind of opal is it?

Every fossil is one of a kind. This valuation is based on weight, opalisation, colour and a few other features, like any opal. A rare species, a complete or well-preserved specimen, or strong collector or scientific interest can make a fossil worth far more than this figure. The more unique the fossil, the higher it should be valued, so treat this as a starting point and get a specialist valuation for any significant piece.

Finish and condition
How finished is it?
Is it solid?
Any cracks or faults?
Not sure?
Solid or not: look at the side of the stone. A straight, even join line with a black layer underneath means it's a doublet. If it also has a clear, glassy dome on top, it's a triplet.
Faults: shine a torch across the surface from the side. Fine lines that catch the light are cracks or crazing. Small grey or white specks are sand spots or inclusions, which count as Minor. If you can't tell, choose Minor rather than None.
What colour is it?
The colour you see most when the stone is face up. Tap a second colour if two share the face.
Slide to set how much of the colour is each one. The colour value is averaged by these shares.

What pattern does it show?
How the colour is arranged on the face. If nothing matches clearly, choose Standard.

Start with a photo
Your photo sits beside the examples while you grade, so you can compare as you go. It also goes on your result and on a listing if you sell. A short video lets you pick the frame with the best colour.
Tap the frame you want shown with the result.
Frame your opal
Drag the square onto your opal. Pinch, or drag the corner dot, to make it bigger or smaller.
Fit the oval to the stone
Drag the oval onto the stone and use the corner dot to resize it. Keep fingers outside it as much as you can.
